Secrets of Kalaat M'gouna ; A Town of Roses

If you are looking for a body remedy, sprinkle with rose water, if you need it for the soul, then visit Kalaat M'gouna, a fortified village 90 km from Ouarzazate. This village, located at the foot of the High Atlas is a gateway to the majestic Valley of Roses that includes about 30 km of cultivation of roses resistant to cold and drought.

This valley stands out above all for its extraordinary smell. Everyone knows what the roses smell like, but the smell that emerges in spring in the area of Kalaat M'gouna is unique and difficult to compare. Thousands of hectares are dressed in pink, producing an aroma that makes the month of May a unique time to visit the place.

PROCESSING OF ELABORATION 

The cultivation of the characteristic damascene rose from April to May. Distilling and processing of cosmetic products are the industries that occur in the area. The first step, the women proceed to the collection of flowers and, after this, in the Kasbahs they are selected by letting the petals dry and taking them to a distillery to start the industrial process that leads to getting the rose water.

One of the most interesting aspects is to know how is the procedure of the distillery of roses. Enter, visit and see the production of this product so rich and demanded, it can be done at any time of the year, although May is the most special month due to the harvest.

The village is inhabited by a Berber population that is sustained by the rose industry. But, the rose is not native to the area in a fortuitous way. This was carried by the French in 1938, opening the first distillery in the area in this small town and, making it so, Moroccan capital of the rose.

LAS ROSAS FESTIVAL 

A tradition that takes place from year to year can be the Festival or Festival of Roses, held the first weekend of May, is a festival that commemorates the flowering in the Valley of Roses. During the two days of the festival, more than 4,000 tons are produced, since one liter of rose water is made with one ton of flowers. Arrival this date, the balconies of the houses are decorated with flowers to celebrate this popular party so marked. 

The benefits of rose water are many, among which stand out the elimination of scars or burns, prevents wrinkles, removes makeup and nourishes and hydrates the skin.
